Founded in 1986 in Italy, Slow Food became an international non-profit organization in 1989 when delegates from 15 countries endorsed the Slow Food Manifesto, written by founding member Folco Portinari on November 9, 1989. Today Slow Food is currently made up of nearly 1000 ‘Convivia’ or chapters, whose vast network of over 100,000 members, on five continents, is the greatest strength of the movement.
Slow Food links pleasure and food with awareness and responsibility. The association’s activities seek to defend biodiversity in our food supply, spread the education of taste, and link producers of excellent foods to consumers through events and initiatives. Slow Food advocates the importance of respecting traditional knowledge and taste, providing farmers with fair wages, and attending to the needs of the land. We celebrate our diverse cultures and communities, and appreciate the art of a care.
“Good. Clean. Fair.” These are the words Slow Food’s founder Carlo Petrini uses to describe his vision of our food system.
The international headquarters of Slow Food is located in Bra, Italy in the region of Piedmont. Through its understanding of gastronomy with relation to politics, agriculture and the environment Slow Food has become an active player in agriculture and ecology. Slow Food works locally as well as with international policymakers such as the United Nations Food & Agricultural Organization.
Slow Food Manifesto excerpts: “…In the name of productivity, Fast Life has changed our way of being and threatens our environment and our landscapes. So Slow Food is now the only truly progressive answer. That is what real culture is all about: developing taste rather than demeaning it. And what better way to set about this than an international exchange of experiences, knowledge, projects?”… Slow Food Intl
Slow Food USA oversees Slow Food activities in North America, including the support and promotion of the activities of 150 local chapters, or “convivium,” that carry out the Slow Food mission on a local level. Each convivium advocates sustainability and bio-diversity through educational events and public outreach that promote the appreciation and consumption of seasonal and local foods and provide support to those who produce them. Slow Food USA is supported by over 20,000 members. Experiencing rapid growth, Slow Food USA has become the second largest Slow Food organization in the world after Slow Food Italy. Slow Food USA
